Places to visit:
Kandy- A religious centre for the Sinhalese, one can explore Kandy’s Buddhist pilgrimage sites and the lovely sunrise there. The mesmerising UNESCO World Heritage site -Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is to watch out for. Walk around the picturesque Kandy Lake, the Bogambara lake, halt at the colossal Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue and the Spice Garden.
Pinnewaala Elephant Orphanage- The orphanage was originally founded in order to provide care and protection to numerous orphaned elephants found in the jungles of Sri Lanka. The elephants were so adorable!
Mirissa- Mirissa is the apt place to unwind and chill without having a care in the world. One of the most favourite beach towns of Sri Lanka, it is a blend of the buzzing Unawatuna (north) and the quaint Tangalle (south). We stayed at the Edeilwess Resorts and our night go-to joint used to be Dr. House. Do go for Blue whale watching there and visit this vegan café called ‘Ahimsa’ for the most delectable vegan stuff!
Unawatuna Beach- It is the busiest of all the beach towns as it’s nothing but super touristy! It has many beachfront restaurants along with many shops, guesthouses, souvenir stores and tour offices. Savour falafel, smoothies and avocado toast at this sort after vegan café- Jina’s Café!
Galle Fort- This is the largest fortress in Asia built by Europeans. It is one of the five historic sites of Sri Lanka, a UNESCO world heritage site. So, one better makes it a mandate to visit this gorgeous place, especially if one is staying on the southern beaches.
Go where you feel most ‘Alive’
Bentota– One of the most popular beach resorts and sparsely populated city on the island. Has a plethora of cafes and restaurants, travel agencies and car transport.
The tropical fruit Mangosteen is very popular in Sri Lanka. It’s the size of a tennis ball, with a firm shell that is deep purple.
